Log-book, 1850-1861.

Log of the clipper ship Surprise, Philip Dumaresq, master, on a voyage from New York to San Francisco, Canton, London, and New York (1850-52). Also, a voyage under Charles A. Ranlett, Shanghai to New York (1855-56), and again (Jan.-Mar. 1857). The volume was then used as a nautical scrapbook, and contains newsclippings, charts, maps, broadsides, and engravings (dated to 1861) pasted in, obscuring some pages. Includes some materials concerning the drowning of Capt. Dumaresq.
